SAGUACHE— The Saguache Senior Citizens invite all seniors and veterans of all ages to join them for Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 at the senior citizens center in Saguache. The center is located at 605 Christy Ave. inside the Saguache Social Services building.
Snacks and drinks will be served during the open house from 9-11 p.m. Senior center members invite local residents to bring a friend or sweetheart to enjoy the music and conversation.
To make a reservation for lunch at noon on Valentine’s Day please RSVP at 589-4511.
The center offers a large, comfortable, newly furnished recreation area complete with a new pool table, dart board and a computer center. A separate reading space also is provided for members.
Computer classes are held on an individual basis at the center. Sewing lessons will begin when three or four members sign up and quilting classes also are offered. Seniors can participate in “soft” exercises every day to stay fit. Puzzle tables are available, and study and Scrabble groups meet regularly at the center.
Special events are hosted during the holidays.
Lunch is served for seniors daily around noon through the South Central Colorado Seniors program. The cost to seniors over 60 is $3 and those under 60 pay $7. Monday’s menu was ham and bean soup, salad, crackers and pineapple tidbits, served with a drink of choice.
“If you have a decent meal at noon then you can have something light at night and you don’t have to cook a lot,” senior citizens spokesperson Barbara Donahue noted. “You can also take home any leftovers.” The center also prepares and delivers meals for the homebound.
To become members and receive their meals, seniors must register with South Central Colorado Seniors. Membership dues are $7 per year. “When you fill out an application and belong to SLV seniors, there are a lot of things available you wouldn’t normally have,” Donahue explained. “They have information on how seniors can receive different benefits and can help with any problem you have.”
Donahue said the challenge with the senior’s center right now is to increase their membership and let seniors know they have services they can rely on. “We have a hard time getting seniors to the center,” she said. “We are hoping to get more people who need these services to come to the center.” Many seniors cannot get out, she said, and some of them are still working.
Donahue urged them all to stop by and register for membership on Valentine’s Day. Someone is usually at the center in the morning before lunch and the center is open until 3 or 4 p.m. in the afternoon.
The address for the center is: Saguache Senior Citizens, P.O. Box 166, Saguache, CO 81149.
