SAGUACHE — Mountain Valley School’s Career Fair May 6 saw a strong turnout from both students and presenters, with most students showing interest in health care careers such as EMT/paramedic, nurses, doctors and physical/occupational therapists.
Students interested in health care careers said they also learned about colleges that offer programs for these careers.
Sixty-two students from Moffat, Mountain Valley and Crestone Charter Schools attended the fair and over 30 presenters made themselves available to students.
Students are required by state legislation to have an Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) in place by the beginning of their ninth-grade year. The Career Fair was held to help students acquire more information about local job opportunities related to their ICAP career interests.
“Students learned great tips about entrepreneurship,” organizer Miracle Gomez said following the fair. “One student reported ‘to be successful, be unique.’”
Students also loved meeting with firefighters, police officers, sheriff’s office personnel and service men in the various military branches.
“School staff members were amazed that our entire gymnasium was full of employers/presenters,” Gomez said. “Our students were excited to learn more about careers that interested them.”
She reported that the evening job fair also went well with several employers staying through the night and several people stopping by.
